Taking a step to reduce harmful air pollutants and help prevent wildfires, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has extended restrictions on the open burning of residential waste effective October 14. 2009. The open burning of residential waste will be prohibited in all communities statewide, regardless of population, with exceptions for burning tree limbs and branches, which is allowed by permit between May 15th and March 15th of the following year.

Important Notes for the Town residents:
- The open burning of residential waste is prohibited in all communities statewide.
- On-site burning of limbs and branches is prohibited between March 15th and May 15th.
- A permit is required for the open burning of tree limbs and branches.
- Limbs over 6-inches in diameter may not be burned in an open fire.
Burn Permits are required for all open burning except recreational fires, as defined:
Recreational Fire. An outdoor fire burning materials other than garbage, rubbish or refuse where the fuel being burned consists of a total fuel area of three (3) feet or less in diameter and two (2) feet or less in height for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth or similar purposes and excluding the burning of materials for the sake of disposal. The minimum required distance of a recreational fire from a structure shall be twenty-five (25) feet.
